Replica Patek Philippe split seconds: the short answer

A replica Patek Philippe split-seconds chronograph copies the dial, case, and hands of references 5370P, 5959P, or 5204. Most copies do not reproduce the rattrapante function. On the common builds the second chronograph hand sits fixed to the first hand, or runs on a plain gear with no clamp. The split pusher does nothing, or stops both hands at once.

The genuine references

  • 5370P: 41 mm platinum case, launched 2015, manual wind, caliber CHR 29-535 PS. Black dial on the first version, blue enamel dial on a later version.
  • 5959P: 33 mm platinum case, launched 2005. Caliber CHR 27-525 PS measures 5.25 mm thick.
  • 5204: 40 mm case, split-seconds chronograph with a perpetual calendar, caliber CHR 29-535 PS Q.

Patek Philippe has not built a split-seconds chronograph in a steel case. A steel case on a watch sold as a 5370P copy is a mismatch with the original.

What a rattrapante needs

A real split-seconds movement carries two seconds hands on one axis. A clamp holds the split hand. An isolator keeps the two wheels apart. A second column wheel controls the sequence. Press the split pusher once: the split hand stops while the chronograph hand keeps running. Press it again: the split hand jumps forward and joins the running hand.

Low-end replica movements use a Chinese manual-wind chronograph from the Seagull ST19 family. That movement runs at 21,600 vph and drives one chronograph hand. Some builders add a second hand on the dial and a pusher at 8 or 10 o'clock. That hand stops when pressed. It returns to zero when the main chronograph resets, not before.

How to test a copy

  1. Start the chronograph. Both hands should move together.
  2. Press the split pusher. The split hand should stop. The chronograph hand should keep moving.
  3. Press the split pusher a second time. The split hand should jump to the running hand and follow it.
  4. Reset the chronograph. Both hands should return to zero.

Ask for a video of steps 1 through 4 before payment. A photo of two hands at rest proves nothing.

Price bands

  • $300 to $500: ST19 base, split pusher decorative, mineral or sapphire crystal.
  • $600 to $1,200: better case finishing, sapphire crystal, decorated bridges. The split function stays cosmetic in most units.
  • $1,500 to $2,500: custom builds. Ask for the movement name in writing.

Genuine 5370P and 5959P examples sell in the six-figure range at auction. No replica maker ships a working rattrapante at a four-figure price. Treat a claim of one as unsupported.

Other checks

  • Case width: 41 mm for 5370P, 33 mm for 5959P. A 44 mm case sold as a 5370P is wrong.
  • Weight: a 41 mm steel copy on a leather strap weighs about 80 g to 100 g. Platinum originals weigh more.
  • Dial: compare the signature, the subdial spacing, and the tachymeter scale against photos of the reference.
  • Strap and buckle: replicas ship with generic leather and a stamped buckle.
  • Warranty: sellers quote 6 to 12 months on the movement. Terms are hard to enforce.

Legal status in the US

Counterfeit watches are illegal to sell or import in the United States. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. US Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments. Buyers hold no recourse for defects.
