Short answer

Replica Patek Philippe chronographs cost $250 to $1,500. Price tracks the movement and the case. Manual-wind replicas copy the reference 5170 and the reference 5070. Automatic replicas copy the 5960, the 5905, and the Nautilus 5980. No replica uses a Patek Philippe movement. The better ones use a Seagull ST19 or a Valjoux 7750 clone.

What the real watches run

Patek Philippe makes its own chronograph calibers. The CH 29-535 PS is manual, with a column wheel and a horizontal clutch. It powers the reference 5170 from 2010 and the reference 5172 from 2019. The CH 28-520 is automatic, with a vertical clutch. It sits in the reference 5960 and the Nautilus 5980.

Those calibers are not sold to third parties. Replica factories build around other movements instead.

Movement options in the replica market

  • Seagull ST19. Chinese manual caliber with a column wheel and a horizontal clutch. Subdials sit at 3 and 9. That matches the 5170 layout. Power reserve is about 40 hours.
  • A7750. Clone of the Valjoux 7750. Automatic. Cam switching, not a column wheel. Subdials sit at 12, 6, and 9. The rotor is louder than the genuine automatic.
  • Quartz. Common in low-cost 5960 and Nautilus chronograph copies. The running seconds hand ticks once per second.

Checks before you pay

  1. Case thickness. A 7750 case adds 2mm or more over the genuine spec. The 5170 is a thin watch. A thick copy is wrong.
  2. Subdial count and position. The 5170 has two. The 5960 has three plus a date window at 6.
  3. Pusher action. Start, stop, reset. A column wheel gives a light click. A cam system feels heavier.
  4. Hand stack height. Look from the side. A gap above 0.5mm shows under light.
  5. Dial print. Check the logo and the Geneve line for alignment. Check the subdial rings for even spacing.
  6. Caseback. Genuine Patek engraving is deep and sharp. Laser etching looks flat.
  7. Water resistance. Most sellers do not test gaskets. Do not swim with a replica.

Price bands

  • $250 to $400: ST19 or quartz, 316L steel, sapphire or mineral glass.
  • $400 to $800: Better case finish, sapphire with anti-reflective coating, 904L steel on some listings.
  • $800 to $1,500: Case dimensions within 1mm of the genuine, decorated movement, crisp dial print.

What you give up

A replica holds no collector value. Genuine Patek chronographs trade at auction for five and six figures. Service is the second gap. Independent watchmakers may refuse the work. Parts come from the same supply channel as the watch.

Legal position in the US

US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry. Import for personal use is not allowed. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal offense under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Penalties include fines and prison time.
