Replica Fifty Fathoms "Heritage" watches copy the Blancpain tribute models that use the 1953 dive watch layout. They come in 41mm and 45mm cases, with Seagull, Miyota, or Asia ETA clone movements. Prices run from $250 to $600. No replica maker publishes pressure test data.
Where the name comes from
Blancpain released the Fifty Fathoms in 1953. French combat swimmers asked for a watch they could read underwater. The spec called for a black dial, large luminous numerals, and a rotating bezel with markers. Fifty fathoms equals 91 meters.
Blancpain returned to that design in 2003 with the "Tribute to Fifty Fathoms" line. Sellers shorten the phrase to "Heritage." Blancpain does not use "Heritage" as a collection name on its own.
Specs of the tribute models
- Case: 40.3mm to 45mm, steel or titanium
- Bezel: sapphire insert on 2003 and later tributes, aluminum on the 1953 original
- Movement: caliber 1315, 120-hour power reserve, silicon balance spring
- Water resistance: 300m on modern refs
- Lug width: 22mm or 23mm
- Dial: black, no date on the closest tribute refs
What replica versions change
- Case size: 41mm or 45mm. Casebacks sit thicker than the original.
- Movement: Seagull ST2130, Miyota 9015, or Asia ETA 2824 clone. Power reserve lands at 38 to 42 hours.
- Bezel insert: sapphire on top-tier builds, mineral glass or coated metal on low-tier.
- Lume: C3 or BGW9. Application is by hand, so pip alignment changes from batch to batch.
- Crystal: sapphire, single or double AR coating.
Movements in detail
The Seagull ST2130 is a 28,800 vph automatic with 38 hours of reserve. The Miyota 9015 runs at 28,800 vph with 42 hours. Asia ETA 2824 clones copy the ETA layout, so parts and servicing are easier to source. None of these have a silicon balance spring. None reach 120 hours.
Inspection list
- Turn the bezel through a full rotation. Count the detents and feel for backlash.
- Check the lume pip at 12 against the dial triangle.
- Set the date and watch the change point. Slow roll and midnight snap differ.
- Look at dial printing under a loupe. Compare font weight on the depth text.
- Check caseback engraving depth and serial format.
- Check crown thread engagement and stem wobble.
- Ask for a timegrapher photo. A rate within plus or minus 10 seconds per day is a fair target.
Water resistance
ISO 6425 sets the test rules for dive watches. It covers a 100m minimum rating, legibility in the dark at 25cm, a unidirectional bezel with a 60-minute scale, and corrosion and shock checks. Replica sellers do not run these tests. Gaskets sit dry from the factory in many cases. Have a watchmaker pressure-test the case before any contact with water.
