IWC launched the Aquatimer in 1967. The first model, ref. 812AD, rated to 200 m. The chronograph branch arrived in the 1990s with the GST Aquatimer Chronograph.   • Weight. A 316L steel case with a steel bracelet lands near 180 g.

What they get wrong

  • Movement. An Asian 7750 beats at 28,800 vph, but the rotor spins with more noise than caliber 79320.
  • Subdial spacing. Copies built on a 7750 platform sit wider than the genuine 79320 layout.
  • Date wheel. Font weight and window framing differ on most units under $250.
  • Bezel action. The SafeDive inner ring on a replica turns with more play and less detent feel.
  • Water resistance. Sellers list 100 m or 300 m. Few units are pressure tested. Treat any rating as unverified.

Price tiers

Under $150 you get a mineral crystal, a stamped clasp, and a low-grade 7750 copy. From $200 to $300 the crystal becomes sapphire, the bracelet gets solid end links, and the dial printing improves. Above $350 sellers claim super clone status, which for this model means a closer case profile and a decorated rotor. No tier changes the movement architecture.

Checks before you buy

  1. Ask for a photo of the movement through the caseback.
  2. Confirm the crystal type in writing. Mineral scratches. Sapphire does not.
  3. Run the chronograph start, stop, and reset three times. A sticky reset points to a worn cam.
  4. Check the bezel alignment against the 12 o'clock marker.
  5. Assume no water resistance until a watchmaker tests the seals.

Servicing a replica chronograph costs $80 to $150 at an independent shop. Parts for the Asian 7750 are common. Parts for a decorated clone are not.
