Short answer
The 4130 is a Rolex chronograph movement. Rolex fits it to the Cosmograph Daytona. The Day-Date runs a different movement family. No Day-Date left the factory with a 4130. A listing that says "Day-Date 4130" joins two model lines. Read the photos, not the code.
Movement codes side by side
- Day-Date 36, older references: calibre 3155. Day and date, no chronograph.
- Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40, current references: calibre 3255. Power reserve 70 hours.
- Cosmograph Daytona: calibre 4130. Power reserve 72 hours. Column wheel and vertical clutch. Chronograph.
A chronograph movement drives subdials and pushers. A Day-Date case has no pushers.
What replica sellers mean
Two separate products get merged into one search term. Replica Day-Dates ship with A2836, A2824, or a clone of the 3255. Replica Daytonas ship with SL-4130 or SA4130 clones. The 4130 clone uses a column wheel, so the pushers feel crisp and the chronograph seconds hand starts without a jump. The 2836 is a workhorse with a date function and no chronograph. Price tracks factory tier, not the code printed in the ad.
Check the dial first
- Day arc at 12 and date at 3: Day-Date.
- Three subdials at 3, 6, and 9: Daytona.
- Pushers at 2 and 4: Daytona.
- Fluted or smooth bezel with a President bracelet: Day-Date.
Sizes and numbers
Day-Date 36 measures 36 mm. Day-Date 40 measures 40 mm. Daytona measures 40 mm and sits thicker because of the chronograph works. The President bracelet uses semi-circular links. The Daytona uses an Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex rubber. A replica Day-Date in steel weighs less than the 18k piece it copies.
What the code cannot tell you
Case thickness, lug profile, crown size, date font, and bracelet end link fit. Ask for a caliper photo and a photo of the caseback. The movement code is a label. The case is the tell.
