Step-by-step check

  1. Confirm the reference. Ask for the number engraved between the lower lugs. An Air-King is either 116900 (2016 to 2022) or 126900 (2022 onward). Any other number rules the watch out.
  2. Look for a date. No Air-King has one. A date aperture or a cyclops lens ends the inspection.
  3. Measure the case across the bezel with calipers. It should read 40.0 mm. Replica cases run 0.4 to 0.8 mm wide or short.
  4. Inspect the dial text under the loupe. Genuine printing has flat, sharp edges and even spacing. Fake text looks thick, with fuzzy borders and uneven gaps in "OYSTER PERPETUAL" and "AIR-KING".
  5. Check the green on the seconds hand. Genuine green is saturated and even along the full length. Most fakes lean olive or yellow.
  6. View the hand stack from the side. The hour hand sits close to the dial and all three hands sit parallel. A bent seconds hand or a high stack points to a replica.
  7. Study the coronet at 12 o'clock. Count five points with an oval base and a small oval dot under each outer point. Fakes show a fat center point or merged dots.
  8. Read the rehaut engraving. Modern Air-King references carry repeated ROLEX text around the flange with the coronet at 12. Genuine engraving is crisp and shallow. Laser work on a fake looks sandblasted or cut too deep.
  9. Weigh the watch on a full Oyster bracelet. A genuine 116900 or 126900 lands near 145 to 155 g. Plated brass or 316L replicas run 15 to 30 g light. Treat the scale as one signal, not proof.
  10. Test the movement. The 116900 uses caliber 3131 and the 126900 uses caliber 3230. Both beat at 28,800 vibrations per hour and both hack. A stuttering seconds hand or a 21,600 beat rate is a replica tell.
  11. Time it on a rate machine. A Superlative Chronometer Air-King runs within -2/+2 seconds per day. Replicas drift from +15 to +40 seconds per day.
  12. Inspect the bracelet and clasp. Solid end links meet the case with no gap, the clasp closes with one firm click, and the Easylink extension moves without resistance. Fake clasps rattle and the end links rock.
  13. Turn the watch over. The case back is smooth and unengraved. Stickers, engravings, or a display back all signal a replica.

126900

Crown guards appear at the 3 o'clock side, and the dial adds a "05" marker at 12 o'clock. The caliber 3230 raises the power reserve to 70 hours. Fakes often reuse a 116900 case and miss the crown guards or the 05 marker.
