Federal law treats the commercial side of that gap as counterfeiting, not as a style choice.

Where copies fall apart
Gold content is the first split. A genuine 126618 case, bezel, bracelet, and clasp are 18 kt gold through and through. Most copies use steel with a gold-colored plating. Plating thickness runs from less than 1 micron to about 5 microns. Plating wears through at the clasp, the crown guards, and the caseback edge. A plated watch also reads light on a scale. The gap between steel and gold is easy to feel in the hand and easy to see on a kitchen scale.
Movement is the second split. Copies use Seiko NH35 movements, ETA clones, or Chinese 3135 copies with decorative plates. The decoration covers a movement with different jewel counts, different beat rates, and different service parts. A watchmaker with a caseback tool can tell in minutes.
Details matter at 10x magnification. Check the cyclops magnification at 2.5x, the date font, the depth of the rehaut engraving, the fit of the end links, and the sound of the bezel click. On the original, the model number is stamped between the lugs at 12 o'clock and the serial sits on the rehaut at 6 o'clock. Copies often place both marks in the wrong spot with the wrong font.
