The Patek Philippe Aquanaut is one of the most copied luxury watches in the world. A fake Aquanaut is a copy of the reference 5167A and its close relatives, and the copies span a wide range, from a $60 quartz toy to a $700 high tier replica with a cloned automatic movement. The fastest way to tell them apart is the dial. The genuine watch uses an embossed grid pattern with sharp, raised edges, while most fakes show a printed or flattened texture with soft lines. After the dial, work through the case profile, the crown, the movement, and the caseback engraving, in that order.
Prerequisites
- A 10x jeweler's loupe
- Digital calipers
- Daylight or a 5000K lamp
- Photos of a known genuine 5167A for side by side comparison
Inspection steps
- Measure the case. The 5167A is 40 mm across and about 8.1 mm thick. A copy that reads 41.5 mm or 9.5 mm is wrong before you look at anything else.
- Study the dial grid. Genuine embossing catches light on the raised ridges and casts small shadows in the recesses. A flat sticker texture or a faded print is the clearest sign of a fake.
- Check the date window at 3 o'clock. The aperture should sit square to the dial print, with the numeral centered and a clean beveled edge around the opening.
- Inspect the hands and markers. Applied gold numerals and hands hold lume that sits flush. Painted lume, uneven edges, or a second hand that skips on a quartz tick points to a low tier copy.
- Look at the crown. It should seat flush against the case with a smooth, tight action and no gap at the tube.
- Flip the watch over. The 5167A has a sapphire display back. Cheap fakes use a solid steel back or a mineral glass window with a cloudy finish.
- Check the strap. The genuine tropical composite strap is soft, matte, and cut with a precise taper. A stiff rubber band with rough edges is a common replacement on cheaper builds.
- Read the movement. The caliber 324 S C runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour with a 45 hour power reserve. A rotor with flat, brushed finish and no Geneva stripes belongs to a generic Asian clone, not a genuine or high grade unit.
- Verify the serial and papers. Numbers on the case and movement should match, and the engraving should be crisp and shallow rather than stamped and heavy.
Tiers of fake Aquanaut
Budget tier
Quartz or low grade automatic movement, printed dial, plated case, wrong thickness. These sell for under $100 and are easy to catch in hand.
Mid tier
Automatic movement, better grid texture, closer case dimensions. Weak points are the crown, the engraving, and a rotor with crude finishing.
High tier
Clone movement, sapphire on both sides, correct 40 mm case, and a dial that copies the embossed pattern. The remaining gaps are in movement decoration, bracelet or strap softness, and the depth of the caseback engraving.
Where copies still fall short
Water resistance is the most common failure. Patek rates the 5167A to 120 meters, and a case built without proper gaskets and pressure testing will leak at the first swim. Movement finishing is the second gap. Geneva stripes, polished bevels, and a gold rotor are expensive to copy, so most fakes skip them. The third gap is consistency between the dial, case, and paperwork, which is where sellers of counterfeit watches get caught during resale.
Before you buy
If a seller cannot show the movement through a display back, cannot provide matching serial photos, or prices the watch far below the secondary market, treat it as a fake. Ask for a timed video of the running movement, a photo of the caseback engraving at 10x, and a caliper shot of the case. A seller with a real high tier replica will answer those requests without hesitation.
