Answer First
A fake Omega Seamaster fails five checks: the case back serial does not match Omega records, the bezel insert is printed rather than ceramic, the seconds hand steps instead of sweeping, the helium escape valve is a fixed stud, and the bracelet uses hollow end links. A genuine Seamaster Diver 300M uses a 42 mm case, 300 m water resistance, and a Master Chronometer movement tested by METAS.
Check the Reference Number
Every Seamaster carries a reference number on the case back. A Diver 300M on a steel bracelet reads 210.30.42.20.01.001. The first three digits give the family, the next two the case size, the rest the dial and bracelet. Counterfeit sellers reuse one reference across several sizes. Measure the case with a caliper. A 210.30 reference on a 39 mm case is wrong.
Read the Serial Number
Omega stamps an 8 digit serial on the case back and again on the movement bridge. The two numbers must match. Omega publishes serial ranges by production year, so a serial outside the correct range for the model dates the watch wrong. Many counterfeits repeat the same first four digits on every unit.
Inspect the Movement
Omega has fitted Co-Axial escapements since 1999. The current Diver 300M runs caliber 8800 with a 55 hour power reserve, 25,200 vibrations per hour, and resistance to 15,000 gauss. A counterfeit with a display back shows an unmarked rotor, no Co-Axial bridge, and a balance wheel at 21,600 vph. Ask for a timing reading. A Master Chronometer card lists the movement serial and the test results.
Look at the Bezel and Crystal
The Diver 300M bezel insert is ceramic with enamel filled numbers. Genuine sapphire crystal carries an anti-reflective coating on both faces. Fakes use mineral glass, which a steel pin scratches, and a painted aluminum insert, which fades in sunlight.
Hands, Dial, and Lume
Genuine Seamaster hands have beveled edges and polished centers. Lume plots sit in applied frames. A fake dial shows a rounded date window, misaligned markers, and a printed wave pattern instead of the laser engraved ceramic dial that Omega introduced in 2018.
Helium Escape Valve and Crown
The valve at 10 o'clock unscrews and seals. On many fakes the valve is a decorative stud with no threads. The crown turns with light resistance through three positions. Crown guards show a mirror polish against a brushed case flank.
Bracelet and Clasp
Genuine bracelets use solid end links and a machined clasp with a stamped logo. Fakes show folded links, sharp edges, and soft screws that strip. Weigh the watch. A steel Diver 300M on a bracelet weighs about 195 g.
Authentication and Law
Omega boutiques and authorized service centers verify serial numbers and issue service papers. In the United States, 18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a criminal offense. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry. A watch with no papers and a price far below market has no verified history.
