Short answer
A fake Omega Co-Ax Chronometer is a replica watch with the words "Co-Axial Chronometer" printed on the dial. Those words describe a movement built by Omega and tested by an outside lab. A replica does not use that movement. The dial text, case, hands, and bracelet are copies.
What "Co-Axial" means
George Daniels patented the co-axial escapement in 1974. Omega bought the design and put it in a series movement in 1999. Caliber 2500 was first. The escapement carries three pallet jewels on one staff. A Swiss lever escapement carries two. The third jewel cuts sliding friction at the pallet. The result is a longer service interval and a steadier rate across months.
Omega moved the design to the 8500 family in 2007 and the 8900 family in 2015. Later versions use a silicon balance spring. Beat rate on the 8500 and 8900 is 25,200 vibrations per hour, or 3.5 hertz.

What "Chronometer" means
Chronometer is a test result, not a brand name. COSC in Switzerland tests movements in five positions at three temperatures. A COSC pass means a mean daily rate between -4 and +6 seconds. Omega ran the 2500 and the early 8500 through COSC.

Master Chronometer
In 2015 Omega added a second test layer. METAS, the Swiss federal metrology institute, runs eight tests on the cased watch. Limits are 0 to +5 seconds per day and 15,000 gauss magnetic resistance. A dial marked "Master Chronometer" claims that certificate.
Movements inside replicas
- Decorated ETA 2824 or Sellita SW200 clones. Beat rate 28,800 vph, 4 hertz.
- Seagull ST2130. Beat rate 28,800 vph, 4 hertz.
- Miyota 9015. Beat rate 28,800 vph, 4 hertz.
- Purpose-built clone 8500 and clone 8900 plates. Some run at 25,200 vph. Most carry a lever escapement, not a co-axial one.
None of these movements hold a COSC or METAS certificate. Out of the box, a $200 to $400 replica runs between -20 and +40 seconds per day. A watchmaker can regulate the balance for a tighter figure.
Points that show the difference
- Escapement under a loupe. Three pallet jewels on a co-axial, two on a lever.
- Bridge and rotor engraving. Genuine parts carry a caliber number and a serial etched by laser.
- Date change. A genuine 8900 snaps to the new date in one step near midnight.
- Magnetism. A METAS watch holds rate inside a 15,000 gauss field. A clone with a steel spring runs fast.
Price and legality
Replica Omega Co-Ax Chronometer watches sell from about $80 to $500. Genuine Omega co-axial models list from about $5,000 to $30,000 on the second-hand market.
US law treats this trade as trademark counterfeiting. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets CBP seize and destroy imported goods that bear a counterfeit mark. 18 U.S.C. 2320 sets criminal penalties for trafficking. Passing a replica off as genuine at resale is a separate offense in most states.
Bottom line
The dial text is easy to print. The escapement, the certificate, and the rate tolerance are not. Buyers who want a co-axial movement and a METAS card have one source: Omega.
