A. Lange & Söhne does not list a watch called Nocturne. Public model pages cover the Lange 1, Zeitwerk, Datograph, Saxonia, 1815, Richard Lange and Odysseus. "Nocturne" appears in replica listings, not in Lange's catalogue. A watch sold under that name is a copy with a seller-made label. The nearest real references are dark-dial Lange 1 and Zeitwerk versions.
What the real watches are
The Lange 1 measures 38.5 mm across and 9.8 mm thick. Caliber L121.1 runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour with 72 hours of power reserve. Layout: main dial at 9 o'clock, outsize date at 1 o'clock, power reserve at 3, small seconds at 5. The Zeitwerk measures 41.9 mm and uses caliber L043.1 with jumping hour and minute discs. The Datograph is 41 mm with caliber L951.6, a flyback chronograph.
Lange cases are yellow gold, white gold, rose gold or platinum. The Odysseus is the exception. It ships in stainless steel and in white gold, 40.5 mm, introduced in 2019. A Lange-shaped watch in bare stainless steel with a gold tone is a plated copy.
Replica tiers and what they cost
Listing prices for Lange copies fall into three bands: about $80 to $200 for quartz or basic automatic builds, $250 to $500 for mid-tier automatic copies, and $500 to $900 for the top tier sold as 1:1. Prices change and sellers reset them. Treat any figure as a comparison point, not a fact.

Checks, in order of weight
- Case metal. Genuine Lange is gold or platinum, with the Odysseus steel exception. Ask for a photo of the caseback and a scale weight.
- Dimensions. Use calipers. A Lange 1 copy that measures 40 mm or more is wrong. Thickness matters more than width. Most copies run 1 mm to 2 mm thick.
- Dial print. Check the gap between "A. LANGE & SÖHNE" and "MADE IN GERMANY". Copies run the text together or use a wrong weight.
- Outsize date. The real mechanism snaps both discs at midnight. Copies drag, jump at 11:55, or show two fonts in the two windows.
- Moon phase. The genuine Lange 1 Moon Phase drifts one day in 122.6 years. A copy moon disc tracks the hour hand. No replica matches this.
- Movement finish. Genuine Lange uses an untreated German silver three-quarter plate, Glashütte ribbing, blued screws in gold chatons, and a balance cock engraved by hand. Each engraver signs the cock. Copy decoration is machine-applied or printed.
- Water resistance. Copy cases are not pressure-tested. A claimed 50 m rating is a claim, not a test result.
- Service. Lange will not service a copy. Parts come from the seller or from a general watchmaker.
Where the top tier still fails
Jumping-digit copies use a module added to a standard base. The discs turn at a speed the eye can follow. The real Zeitwerk switches in an instant. On Lange 1 copies the power reserve hand moves with the mainspring but the scale is printed, so the reading is wrong. Caseback engravings on copies use the wrong font and the wrong reference numbers. No copy carries the hand-engraved balance cock, and that part sits in view through the sapphire back.
What is not known
No public data exists on the metal content of plating, the source of cases, or the true output of any Lange copy. Buyers who need those numbers have to test the watch.
