Short answer
A fake Lange automatic is a replica A. Lange & Söhne watch fitted with a third-party self-winding movement. The giveaway is mechanical, not cosmetic. Most Lange replicas copy hand-wound references such as the Lange 1 and the Datograph. If the caseback shows a spinning rotor on a watch sold as a Lange 1, the watch is not genuine. Lange has built automatic calibers since 1997, but they sit in a small group of references.
Real Lange models that wind automatically
- Langematik. Lange's first self-winding series, introduced in 1997. Caliber L921 family.
- Langematik Perpetual. Added in 2001 with a perpetual calendar.
- Saxonia Automatik. Self-winding member of the Saxonia line.
- Lange 1 Daymatic. Automatic version of the Lange 1 dial layout, caliber L021.1.
Lange publishes power reserve, jewel count and case size for each reference. Numbers change between generations, so check the caliber number on the movement, not the model name on the dial. Lange does not list a self-winding Lange 1. The classic Lange 1 is hand-wound.
Movements used in automatic Lange replicas
Replica makers do not build movements. They buy one and decorate it. Common donors:
- Miyota 9015, a Japanese automatic, 28,800 vph, about 42 hours of power reserve.
- Seagull ST21 and ST18, Chinese ETA clones.
- Hangzhou and Shanghai automatic calibers with added plates.
Decoration on these movements stays on the surface. Rotors get engraved text and a plated finish. Balance cocks get a laser-cut pattern instead of hand engraving. Screws are blued steel set in plain holes, not blued steel in screwed gold chatons. The three-quarter plate under the rotor carries machine-applied ribbing.
Checks you can run in two minutes
- Winding type. A rotor on a Lange 1 means fake.
- Balance cock. Genuine Lange uses hand engraving cut with a burin, with the engraver's initial. Fakes show a shallow repeated pattern.
- Gold chatons. Real Lange screws sit in gold chatons held by two or three screws. Fakes use plain holes.
- Outsize date. Genuine Lange date discs jump at midnight. Replicas drag and land in the wrong position for minutes after 12.
- Case metal. Series production Lange watches are gold or platinum. Steel fakes are common. A small number of steel prototypes exist, and those sit in auctions.
- Size. The Lange 1 Daymatic measures close to 40 mm across. Replica cases often run 41 to 42 mm.
- Serial numbers. Lange matches case and movement numbers. Replicas reuse one number across a run.
Price gap
Genuine Lange automatics sell for tens of thousands of dollars. The Lange 1 Daymatic in rose or white gold lists above $40,000 at retail, and used examples trade below that. Replica sellers ask between $300 and $900 for an automatic Lange fake, with "Swiss movement" versions quoted higher. No replica at any price carries a Lange movement.
What stays unknown
Lange does not publish production totals, so no reliable count of fakes exists. Claims about 1:1 Swiss automatic Lange replicas come from sellers and cannot be verified. Treat any spec sheet from a replica seller as marketing, and confirm movement type from the manufacturer's own reference data.
