A fake Lange 1 Tourbillon is a replica of A. Lange & Söhne's most complicated Lange 1 models, and the biggest lie in that category is the tourbillon itself. Most watches sold under that name do not have a rotating cage. They have a decorated balance wheel that wobbles in place, or a flat disc that spins behind an aperture. A working tourbillon does exist in the replica market through Chinese movement makers, but it only shows up in higher price tiers, and it never matches the hand finishing of the original.
What the genuine watch is
A. Lange & Söhne has built two Lange 1 watches with a tourbillon. The Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar puts the cage at 12 o'clock and adds a perpetual calendar. The Lange 1 Tourbillon Handwerkskunst, a limited run of 30 pieces, replaces the small seconds with the cage at 5 o'clock. Both are hand-wound, both keep the asymmetric Lange 1 layout with the outsize date and the up/down power reserve indicator, and both use a cage that turns once per minute.
That one-minute rotation is the fact you will use most. It is also the hardest thing for a cheap replica to reproduce.
Before you start
- Identify which reference the listing copies. The Perpetual Calendar and the Handwerkskunst look nothing alike.
- Get the stated case diameter and thickness, plus a straight-on dial photo.
- Ask the seller for uncut video, not edited clips.
- Have calipers ready if the watch is already in your hands.
The three tiers sold as Lange 1 Tourbillon
- Decorated balance. The balance wheel sits under an ornate bridge shaped like a cage. Nothing rotates except the balance, which oscillates back and forth. This is the most common build.
- Open-heart spinner. A disc or ring behind the aperture turns, sometimes once per minute, sometimes faster. There is no balance and no escapement inside it, so the watch keeps time from a hidden movement elsewhere.
- Real Chinese tourbillon. A rotating carriage holds the balance and escapement and completes one turn per minute. Seagull and Hangzhou movements are the usual donors. These watches are thicker and cost more because the movement costs more.
How to verify a tourbillon claim
- Request a continuous 90-second video that shows the dial and the caseback in the same take.
- Count one full rotation against a stopwatch. A real cage finishes a turn in 60 seconds. Anything much faster is a spinner.
- Watch the balance inside the cage during that turn. It should beat several times per second while the cage creeps around.
- Check the small seconds. On a real tourbillon the seconds indication is tied to the carriage or the fourth wheel, so the hand and the cage stay in step.
- Look at the cage from a low angle. A real carriage has an upper bridge, a lower bridge, and a visible balance staff. A fake is a flat disc or a hollow ring.
- Compare the movement to the genuine caliber layout. Lange uses a three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing, gold chatons, blued screws, and a hand-engraved balance cock. Replicas use laser etching that looks flat under a loupe.
- Set the watch flat and listen. A real tourbillon runs with the normal beat of a mechanical watch. A spinner driven by its own gear train often adds a soft whirring sound.
Dial and case checks specific to the Lange 1
- Outsize date: two separate discs, tight aperture, correct numeral font. A genuine Lange jumps instantly at midnight. Replicas creep over several minutes.
- Power reserve indicator: it should move only while you wind, then empty over the stated running time.
- Layout offsets: main dial left, date top right, power reserve bottom right, seconds or tourbillon bottom left.
- Case: one crown, no pushers, correct lugs. Measure diameter and thickness against the official spec. A deviation of half a millimeter or more is normal on replicas.
- Hands: heat-blued or polished steel, correct lengths. Replica hands are often too short and too bright.
Price tells you the tier
A genuine Chinese tourbillon movement is an expensive part on its own. A complete watch using one cannot land in the same price band as a standard three-hand replica. When a listing in that band claims a tourbillon, assume a decorated balance until video proves otherwise. Claims of a Swiss tourbillon inside a replica are marketing text, not a specification.
What no replica gets right
The finishing. Hand engraving, black polish, and gold chatons are done by people at a bench, and no replica factory reproduces them at scale. The genuine watches also trade in six figures, which is the other thing a replica will never match.
