Short answer

A fake IW329037 is a counterfeit of an IWC Pilot's Watch. IWC uses the IW3290 block for the Pilot's Watch Automatic 41 line. IWC does not publish a full public archive for every reference in that block. Confirm the dial, case size and strap of IW329037 against a warranty card photo or an IWC dealer record before you judge a watch against it.

What genuine IW3290 watches are

Published specs for the Pilot's Watch Automatic 41: 41 mm steel case, sapphire crystal with antireflective coating on both faces, screw-down crown, 100 m water resistance, IWC calibre 32111, 120-hour power reserve, 28,800 vph (4 Hz). A replica that sells for $80 to $400 does not hit those numbers in a timed test.

Movement checks

  • Power reserve. Wind the watch 40 turns, set it in a drawer, check at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 120 h. Replicas built on a Miyota 8215 copy stop near 40 h. This is the fastest test you can run.
  • Rotor noise. A 32111 rotor is quiet. A cheap clone rattles when you tilt the case.
  • Hacking. Pull the crown. IWC automatics stop the seconds hand so you can set the time to the second. Many replicas keep running.
  • Date change. IWC date wheels snap over near midnight. Clone movements creep from 22:00 to 02:00.

Dial and printing

Use a 10x loupe. Check the "IWC" logo, the "SCHAFFHAUSEN" text under it and the "AUTOMATIC" line. On the genuine dial the paint edges are sharp and the letters sit on one baseline. On fakes the letters are soft, spaced wide or set high. The triangle at 12 has two dots on each side. Lume color must match across the dial, the hands and the triangle. Fakes often show a green cast on the hands and a cream cast on the indexes.

Check the date aperture as well. IWC cuts a beveled window with a sharp edge. A stamped or laser-cut window shows a rough rim and a ring of glue.

Case, crystal and crown

  • Crystal. Genuine glass carries double AR coating, so the crystal all but disappears at an angle. Fakes throw a blue or purple sheen at 45 degrees. Some fakes skip the inner coating.
  • Case flanks. Brushed top surfaces, polished bevels. Look at the line where brushing meets polish. On fakes that line wanders.
  • Crown. The thread on a genuine screw-down crown runs smooth for 3 to 4 turns. Replica threads grate and can cross-thread inside a month.
  • Caseback. Compare engraving depth and letter shape. Laser etching on a fake looks shallow and gray next to the deep stamp on a genuine caseback.

Serial, reference and papers

IWC does not publish a serial-to-reference map. Ask for two photos: the caseback and the warranty card. The reference on the card must read IW329037 and the serial must match the caseback. Ask for the service booklet and the original invoice. A seller who will not send a caseback photo is not selling a genuine watch.

Strap, buckle and box

Check the buckle stamping. Genuine IWC tang buckles carry a crisp logo and "IWC" in a set font. Replica buckles show a thick, filled logo. On leather versions, count the stitches per centimeter and look at the edge paint and the lining. Replica straps use thinner leather and a glued, not stitched, keeper.

Price and channel

Genuine Pilot's Watch Automatic 41 watches trade on the used market in the low thousands of US dollars. A full set with box and papers sits near the top of that range. Any IW329037 offered at 10 to 20 percent of market value is a fake, a franken watch or a stolen watch. Meet at a dealer or an authorized service center for a check before money changes hands.

Two kinds of fake

First: a replica sold as a replica. Second: a counterfeit sold as genuine, or a genuine case with a clone movement inside. The second type costs the most. A movement swap takes 20 minutes and doubles the profit for the seller.
