Prong setting: count them, and check they are even in height and filed smooth at the tips. Four prongs, not three on a round stone. The stone should sit level, with the prong tips just above the girdle. Bezel setting: metal gets burnished over the stone edge in one continuous ring with no gaps or tool marks. On fakes you often see a punched-looking rim, uneven metal thickness, or a stone that rattles when you tap the case.

A genuine diamond-set Clé de Cartier trades in five figures on the used market. Anything under a few hundred dollars with a "diamond" crown is cubic zirconia, full stop. Lab-grown stones at that size exist, but they do not show up in replica crowns with paperwork, and nobody certifies a 1mm stone.
