Start with the case size
Cartier lists the Clé de Cartier in 31 mm, 35 mm, and 40 mm cases. A 26 mm listing is a measured number, not a catalog name. Sellers use it for the case width they read from a caliper. Ask for a photo of the case next to a ruler. If the listing says 26 mm and the photo shows a 31 mm watch, the photo does not match the item.
Price bands
Quartz versions sell for $40 to $90. Automatic versions with a clone of the Cartier 1847 MC sell for $120 to $260. Above $300 you pay for sapphire glass, a heavier case, and a stitched strap. No price turns a replica into a genuine watch. Case metal is steel with gold plating, or brass with plating. Plating thickness runs from 3 to 10 microns. A 3 micron layer wears through at the crown and lugs in months of daily use.

Parameters to check
- Case diameter and lug width, in mm, read from calipers.
- Movement: quartz, Seiko NH35, Miyota 9015, or a clone of the 1847 MC. The Cartier 1847 MC is an automatic with 23 jewels, 28,800 vph, and a power reserve near 40 hours.
- Crystal: sapphire or mineral glass. Sapphire resists scratches from keys and desk edges.
- Crown: the key shape, set into a recess in the case band. Check the cabochon color and the gap at the recess.
- Dial: Roman numerals, inner minute track, blued steel sword hands, date window at 3 o'clock. Check the date font and the numeral alignment inside the window.
- Water resistance: Cartier rates the steel model at 30 m (3 bar). A replica has no pressure test. Do not swim with it.
- Weight: place the watch on a kitchen scale. A steel 31 mm Clé on a leather strap sits near 50 g. A result under 40 g points to a thin case or an alloy body.
- Strap and clasp: leather type, stitching, and the fit of the folding clasp.
Pitfalls
- Photos without a caliper or a scale. Ask for a dated photo of both.
- "Swiss made" on a $60 watch. That stamp on a Clé de Cartier copy is a claim with no movement behind it.
- Gold plating that wears at the crown and lugs. Yellow brass shows through under the plating.
- No return window, or a return address in another country. A 3 day window with a U.S. return address limits your risk.
- Water claims such as "10 ATM" on a case back with no gasket test report.
- Customs. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit goods at the border, and import of counterfeit items is illegal in the United States.
Questions to send the seller
Ask for six items: case diameter with calipers, a photo of the movement and rotor, crystal material, strap material, return window, and shipping method. A seller who answers all six gives you data. The lowest price listing often skips the data and ships a quartz watch with mineral glass and a glued strap.
